I picked up a wrtg54g v6 a month or so back on a Amazon impulse buy. I had been putting off setting up a bridge for my wife as her crappy work laptop used Cisco middleware and for whatever reason kept dropping off the Bonney Lake Enterprise WAP.
The workaround (which was deemed unacceptable by dawsonshire end users) involved running a 75 foot cable from the office to the kitchen. After weeks of complaining I hunkered down in the man cave and went to work.
To my horror I discovered AFTER purchasing the router that version 6 of the wrtg54g is quite worthless for upgrading. Linksys in all their wisdom removed most of the onboard ram thus making it nearly impossible to load the WRTG Linux OS. This is a head scratcher for me. I mean you have a bunch of people who want to buy these devices and then remove the software (thus voiding the warranty). Seems like a great deal…sell lots of hardware, and avoid having to provide support.
Well it turns out that there is a method to loading a Linux OS on these sexy blue boxes. However the only rev that you can use on a version 6 router is the micro kernel. The installation process is a bit more complex then the other dd-wrt versions, but in the end it worked. I did experience several moments of sheer terror when the router blinked and failed to respond (see $60.00 paperweight).
In the end the user community was quite happy about the upgrade. ![]()

Called the dive

Woke up sick this morning, emailed Carl and canceled the dive. Carl was a bit more descriptive on this mornings events. Time to plan for next weekend. That reminds me I need to call Ocean Explorers to book some wreck time.
